Studio practices

How we keep the rooms

These are the practices every teacher follows with younger players.

Staff checks and training

  • Background checks
  • CPR and first aid
  • Mandated reporter training

Safety routines

  • Open doors

Every lesson room has a window in the door or keeps it open, and a parent may sit in at any time.

  • Pickup

A student goes home with the grown-ups on the pickup list. Parents wait in the lobby.

  • When a student is ill

We send a student who feels unwell to the front desk and call a parent. Tell us how you want to be reached.

  • Earplugs

Earplugs are available at the front desk for any rehearsal.

Family and member policies

Photos of your child

We ask your written permission before we share any photo of your child, on this site, in newsletters or on social media, and you can change your answer at any time. We never put a child's name with a photo, and the photos on this site are examples until we replace them with our own.

When to keep your child home

Please stay home with a fever or a stomach bug, and let us know by text or a call so we can offer your lesson time to someone on the waitlist. Wind players, tell your teacher about a cold before the lesson; we can switch to rhythm and theory.

Closures for weather and holidays

We close for Thanksgiving week, over the winter holidays and for severe weather. We text families and members by early afternoon when weather closes the hall, and a lesson we cancel is made up.

Drop-off and pickup

Parents of younger students walk them to the lesson room and wait in the lobby. We hand a student only to the grown-ups on the pickup list you give us, and a teen leaves alone only when a parent has told us so in writing.

Watching class and recitals

A parent may sit in on any lesson, and the door to every lesson room stays open or has a window. Concerts are open to families and friends: arrive early, silence phones and hold applause until a piece ends.

Leaving the program

Tell us in writing a month before your last rehearsal or lesson, by email or at the front desk. We will explain what happens to a season in progress.

What to wear and bring

Wear what you can play in, with closed shoes. Concert days are dark clothes, and the youth ensembles wear black and white.

Screens and phones

Phones stay in a pocket or a bag during a rehearsal or a lesson. A teacher may ask to record a passage so you can practice from it at home.
